MILW 1, an FP45, has been removed from passenger service and assigned to freight service in the months prior to Amtrak's inauguration on May 1, 1971. The five FP45s ran on mainline trains all the way to the Pacific Northwest, but suffered from a lack of dynamic braking. In the Milwaukee retrenchment of 1980, they spent time on CNW in exchange for CNW SD45s to lead MILW trackage rights trains on the CNW mainline across Iowa.
