What a Recession Looks Like

A visit to Southern Pacific's primary yard and shop complex in Los Angeles, Taylor Yard (located just north of downtown), during the 1973-1975 recession provided sad views such as this – long lines of stored locomotives. By March 1975 the recession was coming to an end, although one could not tell based upon these beasts resting in silence with their stacks capped. These deadlines include a wide variety of Southern Pacific and Cotton Belt locomotives, representing at least three builders (Alco, EMD and GE) and a lot of models, including: C415s, DD35s, GP9s, GP20s, GP30s, GP35s, GP40s, U25Bs, U28Bs, U30Cs, U33Cs and U50s. This story has a happy ending, though, as these engines all returned to service once the economy improved. However, a few of the oddballs, such as C415s, DD35s and U50s, did not last long once back in service, as new power allowed the SP to sell off or scrap these engines before the end of the decade.
