The Garratt NG/G16 No.87 with its freight train is perfectly illuminated by the low November sun, while dark clouds loom over the surrounding mountains – a lighting situation we actually wished we'd experienced more often on our 12-day tour of Wales.
The Garratt was built in 1935 by Cockerill in Belgium under license for South Africa, where it remained in service until 1987. Afterward, it came to the United Kingdom until the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways, with the help of a sponsor, brought it back to life from a practically scrap-ready state.
Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.
The reason railpictures.net has captured my imagination for so many years. Images of quality and distinction, in other words, amazing railroad photography.
