Lighting At The Ling. On the afternoon of Monday, November 17, 2025, New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway SU99 crossed the Hackensack River in Hackensack, New Jersey on the way to Binghamton, New York, during perhaps the most direct sun angle of the season so far. The four-pack of NYSW 3016 (SD33ECO) 3618 (SD45-2) 3012 (SD33ECO), and 4060 (SD70M-2) is crossing the bridge in the background under the beautiful blue sky. In the foreground, the sits the USS Ling (SS-297), a Balao-class submarine that was active in the US Navy from 1943-1946. After being stricken from the reserve fleet in 1971, it was displayed at the New Jersey Naval Museum at this location. In recent years, the museum lost its lease on this land, and the submarine was planned to be moved to a new location. Due to damage from Hurricane Sandy, subsequent vandalism, and a variety of other reasons, the Ling is no longer being maintained and is now stuck in place, as seen in this shot showing the exposed sides during a period of low water level.
