It is 6:30 in the afternoon (18:30) and Amtrak San Diegan 775 is making its next-to-last stop as it heads from San Diego to Los Angeles. A pair of SDP40F, built earlier this year, lead this train. AMTK 520 was built by EMD just two months earlier, and companion 515 in one month older than that. And even at just two month of age, the black paint on the frame and trucks is already peeling off, a problem with all the first order of SDP40Fs. (Fullerton, California – September 30, 1973)
