| Downhill Cable.
San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni) cable car 27 is seen descending Hyde St on the Powell-Hyde line, approaching the intersection with Broadway. Just ahead of the car are metal panels in the street, which cover the depression beam mechanism that keeps the cable below the street in locations such as this. These specially-designed mechanisms hold the cable down but are able to move out of the way as the car approaches, allowing the grip to consistently hold the cable as it passes. |
