Shortline steam freight ops. Taking full advantage of a hot steam locomotive, an Arcade & Attica crew conducts a freight move, picking up a pair of empty, covered hoppers at a nearby industrial complex and running them back to their connection with the Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad in Arcade. Consolidation #18 and her train are pictured here just yards north of the bridge crossing Cattaraugus Creek in the Village of Arcade, NY.
This image was captured during a May 2025 photo shoot on New York's Arcade & Attica Railroad (ARA), which operates both tourist and freight operations on trackage extending north from their yard in Arcade, to North Java, NY. Freight operations are normally conducted with GE center-cab diesel-electric locomotives, but occasionally, if a steam locomotive is hot from a recent tourist operation, crews have been known to move freight cars with steam.
