Union Pacific GP40-2 1394, the former Saint Louis-Southwestern (Cotton Belt) 7638, sits in the UP's J Yard south of downtown Los Angeles. As with so many Union Pacific locomotive assigned to urban areas, this Geep has its own unique paint job, courtesy of the local residents.
In the distance, across the Los Angeles River, is the iconic Sears, Roebuck & Company Mail Order Building in Boyle Heights, a landmark in this part of the city. This 1,800,000-square-foot building was erected in six months, completed in late June 1927. It was closed in 1992, with the retail store on the ground floor remaining open until 2021 (remaining open much longer than a typical Sears retail store). (Los Angeles, California – May 31, 2025)
