Dead in Tow. On Friday, May 2, 2025, Amtrak Lake Shore Limited (Train 48) passed through Ludlow near Yonkers, New York under a stormy sky. This train, which had nine passenger-related cars in the consist actually tasked P32AC-DM 701 with towing ten pieces of equipment. Zoom in a little to see the second "locomotive" is AMTK 9700 (née-AMTK 184, P42DC), the world's only operating P42C (cab car). Ironically, the 9700 was marked "Dead In Tow" on the consist. After making a few successful non-revenue runs, the unit is on its way to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for Cab Signal Interference testing. Amtrak is planning to convert more P42DCs to P42Cs (cab car) to facilitate changing ends more quickly at terminals. As the P42/P42C has a maximum allowable speed of 110 MPH, it is not suitable for Northeast Regionals that operate at a maximum of 125 MPH, and will likely be seen mostly on trains like Empire Service.
