A fine-looking quartet of Southwest Pennsylvania Railroad diesels sit in their small facility in Scottdale in … wait for it … southwest Pennsylvania. SWP "GP40-3" 4006 is ex-KCS GP40 4737; ex-NREX 2043; ex-SOO 2043; ex-MILW 2043; née-MILW 170, and is mated with SWP TEBU (slug) 406 (ex-HLCX GP38 3618; ex-HLCX 2027; ex-GWWR 2027; CMNW 2027; CR 7767). SWP 4006 and 406 are, together, classed as an HD40-2.
Completing this lash-up are SWP SD40 3501 (ex-FURX 3006; née-NDM 8563) and SWP SD40 3503 (ex-FURX 3013; ex-NREX 3013; ex-MKCX 9409; née-UP 3095).
The Southwest Pennsylvania Railroad began operations in June 1995 when Trimax (now Carload Express) was selected to operate 66 miles (106 km) of railroad by the Westmoreland County Industrial Development Corporation and the Fay-Penn Industrial Development Corporation. In May 2000, the Southwest Pennsylvania Railroad started service to the Westmoreland Rail Freight terminal near New Stanton. The railroad began service to the Hunter Panels plant in the Fayette Business Park in Fairchance in 2006. In 2011, the Southwest Pennsylvania Railroad commenced service to the Fayette Rail Freight terminal in Smithfield. (Scottdale, Pennsylvania – September 21, 2019)
