This is how the Wabash E8, 1009, appeared when on display at the Roanoke Transportation Museum at Wasena Park in Roanoke Virginia in September 1979. In November 1985, the museum would be devastated by flood waters from the Roanoke River. After the flood, the diesel along with other display equipment was eventually relocated to the current site of the Virginia Museum of Transportation. It languished in a state of disrepair for many years until it was cosmetically restored in 2012-2013. It was repainted at the NS Chattanooga Paint Shop in it’s as delivered Wabash scheme and is currently on display in Roanoke. The unit was the 10,000th diesel locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division on June 14, 1951, at its La Grange, Ill., facility.
