Century-Old Ironwork | Three GE C44ACCTE locomotives lead a northbound Union Pacific manifest train across the 100 year-old bridge over the Grand River in Fort Gibson, OK on a sunny Sunday, December 10, 2023 afternoon. Not visible is the truss span of the railroad bridge, constructed by the Virginia Bridge & Iron Company for what was then the Missouri Pacific Railroad. The truss work in the foreground framing the train is that of the single-lane passage that served as a highway into and out of Fort Gibson until 2017, when a new two-lane bridge was erected adjacent to the existing structure. Built by the Muskogee Iron Works, the original highway connection was completed in 1926.
