In a view from my campsite off the old Denver & Salt Lake Railway’s grueling, long abandoned route over lofty Rollins Pass is Union Pacific MGJNY exiting the 6.21-mile Moffat Tunnel. It’s 8:45 in the morning of September 27, 2023, and aspens are ablaze as the lengthy freight begins it’s descent on a long two percent grade toward Denver.
