On August 10, a northbound freight train derailed in the 57-kilometer-long Gotthard Base Tunnel, and since then both tubes have been closed. All passenger traffic, as well as freight traffic that can pass through the smaller profile, travels via the Gotthard mountain route, today also called the panorama route. "Giruno" highspeed trains RABe 501 # 024 "Neuchàtel" and # 018 "Appenzell Ausserrhoden" of the SBB are running the IC 10151 of the line IC2 from Basel via Olten-Lucerne-Arth Goldau-Bellinzona to Lugano, rounding the Wattinger curve between Gurtnellen and Wassen.
