Standing on the overpass in Winslow, Arizona on a late winter morning, BNSF 4974 comes rolling into town on the final mile of its lengthy crew district from Needles, CA. Out across the majestic sag are two or three signal bridges from the era when indications were displayed to the right of approaching trains. Trains generally kept to the right in CTC territory here, but the old Third District between Winslow and Gallup (Defiance) was current of traffic territory and left-hand running, so trains swapped from right to left hand running at Winslow until CTC was installed east of Winslow circa 2001. Before CTC was installed on the Seligman Sub, trains ran left-handed to the Pineveta jumpover west of Ash Fork.
