Remarks & Notes |
Stevens Pass The Great Northern Railroad surveyed Stevens Pass in 1890 and chose it as the the location for its Transcontinental Mainline. The original alignment was plagued by problems and eventually much of the east slope was realigned and then under-cut by the 7.8 mile Cascade Tunnel in 1929. The mountain was still a challenge as it presented the GN with its steepest ruling grade eastbound and westbound at 2.2%. On this windy late Spring afternoon a westbound Z-train thunders upgrade across Nason Creek on the 2.2% grade. |
