Remarks & Notes
Santa Fe Railway's Ce-5 class of waycars was created in 1970 for a group was cabooses based out of Kansas City KS' Argentine Yard, operated on locals and transfers. Initially retaining their original four-digit numbers (unlike with the Ce-1 and Ce-2 class cars), in 1976 this class was renumbered into the 999900-series. These cars were upgraded, rather than rebuilt as the mainline waycars were: Some windows were removed (plated over), including (on some) cupola windows and the removal of sliding double-hung windows for solid glazing, the removal of the underslung toolboxes, rebuilt underframes (but no installation of cushion underframes) and they retained their old solid-bearing trucks. Most of the cars received a new Indian Red paint job, but minimal lettering (again, unlike the Ce-1 and Ce-2 cars) in the form of a small white ATSF circle-cross logo. Waycar 999917, a round-roof ACF-built car, has wandered quite a way from Kansas City as it was photographed on a Maintenance of Way train in southern California.
