Northbound for Mt. Union. An East Broad Top coal drag rumbles slowly through the yard in Rockhill Furnace, PA, beginning its northbound journey to Mt. Union and interchange with the mighty Pennsylvania Railroad. On the point this day is Locomotive #16, one of three "big boilered" Mikado types, purchased by the EBT in the second decade of the 20th Century. The 16 has 48" drivers and is superheated. She has a tractive effort of 30,600 lbs.
This image was captured during an April, 2023 photo shoot at the East Broad Top Railroad, featuring the newly-restored Locomotive #16, which had not operated since the railroad closed down as a common carrier in 1956. At the throttle this morning was none other than Linn Moedinger, retired President and CMO of the Strasburg, Rail Road.
A look at the one-time coal-hauler, which ran as a tourist railroad for decades and finally ceased operations in 2011. The album includes photos from an October 2010 charter as well as images from the very last Fall Spectacular in October of 2011.
