Remarks & Notes
Sacramento's RT Light Rail is a 42.9-mile (69.0 km) light rail system that serves the California's capital city (and surrounding area). The system consists of three rail lines, 54 stations, and a fleet of 96 vehicles - with more coming. Operated by the Sacramento Regional Transit District (RT), the system averages of 17,300 weekday daily boardings, making it the sixteenth busiest in the United States. Traveling eastbound down O Street (closed to automobile traffic), RT U2A 109 (one of the original 1985-1986-built Siemens-Duewag cars, and wearing a "wrap" advertisement) crosses 11th Street, adjacent to the California state capitol building (completed between 1861 and 1874), on a quiet late Sunday afternoon. Besides being the "Golden State's" capital, Sacramento was the western terminus of the original transcontinental railroad, from which the Central Pacific headed east to Utah – and was also the location, not far from the Capitol, of the massive (Central Pacific successor) Southern Pacific car and locomotive shops.
