Remarks & Notes
Union Pacific GP35 762 is an interesting locomotive. Recently repainted in North Platte NE (on September 18, 1974), this locomotive was not purchased new from builder EMD. Built as EMD Demonstrator 5652 in July 1963, this Geep and EMD 5654, was teamed with two DD35s – EMD 5653 and 5655 – to sell America's railroads on cabless booster units that were essentially a pair of GP35s on one frame. And only two railroads purchased the cabless DD35s: Southern Pacific bought three, and Union Pacific acquired 27 – 25 built for them, and both EMD demonstrators. (UP also ordered fifteen DD35As – DD35s with cabs – at the same time.) Wearing its one-month-old "We Can Handle It" scheme, UP 762 has been with the UP since May 1964, and ten years (and five months) later it paid a visit to the railroad's East Yard, a bit southeast of downtown Los Angeles. (Commerce, California – October 16, 1974)
