Snow is falling at Cajon (elevation 3,116-feet), but at Summit (seven miles away, but at 3,775-feet altitude) the sun is out. While snow this heavy at Cajon is not unheard of, it only occurs every few years in this quantity – and snow was falling at about the 1,000-foot level across southern California during this storm, which is exceedingly unusual (once every twenty years or so, if even that often). So, heading to Cajon Pass to enjoy the weather, we see westbound BNSF train Q-NWHLAC6-20 descending the hill on Track 2 (of three) and passing under the cantilever signals (which look as if some squirted toothpaste on the cantilever) at Cajon it travels from North Baltimore OH to Los Angeles CA. A pair of GE ES44C4s, of which BNSF owns 1,280 and Florida East Coast owns 24, lead this train (numbered 8140 and 6796). The low clouds dropping the snow make it difficult to discern that this is an area surrounded by mountains! (Cajon Pass, California – February 26, 2023)
