Flatback Through The Other Side Of Anaheim. Union Pacific Railroad 1375 (GP40P-2, née-Southern Pacific 3199, EMD, 11/1974) was the sole power for train LOA32 (Anaheim turn) on March 31, 2022 as it approach the intersection at East Ball Road near South Alley Street. After leading out with the short hood (cab first) it presents the rare flatback side to the photographer. The GP40P-2s were a 3 unit order for the Southern Pacific Railroad, built with an extended body to accommodate a steam generator for passenger service in the Bay Area of California, but have been in freight service for many years. This unit and UP 1373 remain with UP, while the third is now with the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad. The style of carbody on EMD manufactured units was limited to the 16 GP40P/P-2s (13 GP40Ps were built for the CNJ in 11/1968), although GMD also manufactured GP40TCs for GO Transit and several series of EMD SD (6 axle) "tunnel motors" also featured this unusual design. Most people who visit Anaheim, California go to Disneyland only seeing only the urbane side of town. Some parts of the residential and urban side, east of the I-5, tell a different story of blue collar industry and hard living conditions.
