Tower 55 On Short Time. Tower 55 sits at the grade-level crossing of the Union Pacific (ex-Texas & Pacific) and the BNSF Railway (ex-AT&SF) in Fort Worth, Texas, nestled between a maze of highways. The original building at this location opened on September 26, 1904 and even today it is still one of the busiest railroad crossings in the United States. November 15, 2022 will also be a significant day for this structure as it is being torn down. A collaboration of UP, BNSF, and other local, state, and federal money packaged together has funded track improvements and remote control of the switches, rendering the building unnecessary. On January 3, 2021, BNSF 6738 (ES44C4) leads a train of covered hoppers over the diamond, which has already been expanded to 3 north/south and 2 east/west tracks as part of the overall project.
