Canadian National acquired a fleet of its own version of an EMD GP40-2 beginning in 1973. Built with CN’s own custom-designed safety cab that provides better collision protection, as well as crew amenities such as a refrigerator, hot plate and coffee pot, the GP40-2LW also has a lightweight frame to increase sand and fuel capacities without exceeding locomotive weight limits. As a result of this custom frame, these locomotives sit slightly higher than a standard GP40-2. CN ended up buying a sizable roster of 233 GP40-2LWs from EMD. Rocky Mountaineer Railtours GP40-2LW No. 8015 leads one of the company’s passenger trains westbound at Banff, Alberta, on October 3, 2010. No. 8015 is former CN GP40-2LW No. 9635.
