| The massive, former Southern Railway Back Shop on the grounds of the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer NC, is the perfect location to display this steam locomotive. J-Class 2-8-0 #542 was built in 1903 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Southern Railway's subsidiary Atlantic & Yadkin Railway. In 1953 the locomotive was working out it's time as a yard goat at the Spencer Shops and ended up being the last Southern Railway steamer to operate there before complete dieselization in 1954. It has been cosmetically restored by the good folks at the museum. |
