Lots Of Single Level. As MTA Long Island Rail Road 411 (DE30AC) threads its way under the signal bridge east of the Jamaica Station on the morning of July 12, 2017 next to M-3 9785, a unique consist passes on the left. A seven-car train of Maryland Area Rail Commuter (MARC) Nippon-Sharyo cars had been leased for summer enhancement of service (with one additional car as a spare), operating as train 613/664 from Port Jefferson, NY to Hunterspoint Avenue in Long Island City, NY and back on weekdays. The remainder of the LIRR’s diesel hauled coaches are double-decker C3 cars, and these cars required modified 36/27 pin jumpers to operate with LIRR's engines. The cars were returned after that summer.
Locomotive-hauled trains extend LIRR service from Midtown New York to the eastern reaches of the North and South Forks. Power has gone through four generations since steam service ended.
