Amtrak train 1105, the westbound Winter Park Express, was due out of Denver Union Station at 7:00 am, but didn’t show up at UP’s North Yard, about one mile away, until 7:35. Amtrak P42DC 130, one of the carrier’s 40th Anniversary Heritage engines (which replaced wrecked AMTK 66) leads the seven-car train, MUed with P42DC 127, which is full of skiers heading to Winter Park, high in Rockies at about 9000-feet (2743 meters) of elevation – roughly 4000-feet (1219 meters) higher than Denver. The train is on Union Pacific’s UP Moffat Sub and will travel 56 miles to Winter Park, crossing the Continental Divide as it passes through Moffat Tunnel, the namesake for this subdivision.
