Car trains have been driving through the tunnel since the Furka Base Tunnel opened in 1982. In winter, when the Furka Pass is closed, these form the only connection from the canton of Uri to the canton of Valais. In 1979, the Furka-Oberalp-Bahn procured two adhesion locomotives Ge 4/4 III Nos. 81 & 82 for these car trains. Locomotive No. 82 was canceled a few years ago due to its poor condition, No. 81 is still in use in car train operations . However, at some point it will also be replaced by the HGe 4/4 II, which can be released from passenger transport thanks to the multiple units that have been ordered. Between the Oberwald bypass tunnel and the Furka base tunnel there is a short stretch in the open where this photo was taken.
