A westbound coal train is nearing the summit of Raton Pass as its DPUs pass Wootton, CO. It was still the good ol' days when BNSF operated a daily manifest and occasional other trains over this arduous grade, exceeding 3%. Three SD70MACs were on the head end, and the train had been split in two at Trinidad, much as Rio Grande split their coal trains to get over Tennessee Pass. Interestingly, the storied contention between Santa Fe and Rio Grande for Royal Gorge and Raton Pass ultimately resulted in both routes being forlorn and forgotten, but for the daily people train on Raton.
