Remarks & Notes
With engineers visible in the lead and third units, two SD40 head-end helpers and a pair of SD45’s pull a westbound Conrail train out of Altoona, Pennsylvania, about a mile east of Horseshoe Curve. It’s strange to think that one of the busiest railroads in the world had deteriorated to the point of having grass growing between its rails. Infusion of cash into the infrastructure would transform the railroad over the next few years.

One artifact of the steam era that remains in use to this day; even modern AC traction locomotives need help on the biggest hills.
