The first measurable snowfall of the 2021-2022 winter season blankets West Virginia on the 6th day of January as a monster 220-car coal drag eases into river bend, illuminating the seldom photographed C&O-era signals at W.E. Coal River Siding. It was a two-plus-hour wait at Coal River Siding, waiting on a maintainer to address frozen switches on the mainline a few miles away before the heavy drag could roll through the lower Coal River valley on its wintertime trip across the C&O to Hinton, W.Va.
