Remarks & Notes
Better Days Behind: This old wooden trestle in Whatcom Falls Park is not long for this world. Built by the Bellingham Bay & British Columbia Railroad in 1916, the bridge was used to access the large Larson Lumber Mill on the shores of Lake Whatcom. Later, the BB&BC became part of the Milwaukee Road. For many years, logs were floated across the lake to the mill where they were loaded onto trains for shipment to Bellingham, WA and points beyond. That all ended in 1963 when the mill burnt to the ground. Shortly thereafter, the bridge was abandoned. Today, the Whatcom County Parks Department has deemed the bridge to be a safety hazard, as some of the supports on the east end of the span have started to lean. Demolition of the bridge is scheduled for spring and summer of 2022 as another piece of history fades into the past.
