In Enemy Territory

The Baltimore and Ohio had competing trackage with the Western Maryland through most of the WM service territory. Needless to say, there was a strong corporate rivalry between the two roads, sometimes manifested as a deep personal dislike. After the WM hired replacement workers (strikebreakers) during a long labor strike in the 1950’s, the road was not popular with B&O men. At the mention of the Western Maryland, my uncle, who was a career B&O trainman/conductor from the 1940’s – 90’s, would get a sour look on his face and say, “that scab railroad”.

The advent of Chessie system in the 1980’s created a somewhat unholy alliance between the two roads, and consolidation blurred the lines. Here two WM F7’s emerge from B&O’s iconic Harpers Herry tunnel during a Washington, D.C. – Martinsburg, WV “Farewell to the WM F’s” excursion as part of the Capitol Ltd. '79 1979 NRHS Convention.
