Remarks & Notes
Guarding over a long gone connection, the signal for Control Point Oakland Junction still stands. The signal guards the old West Point Belt Line that I was standing on, which was constructed has a way for the Atlanta & West Point Route and the Georgia Railroad, both owned by Georgia Railroad & Banking Company, to bypass downtown Atlanta & have direct route between the A&WP here at Oakland City & the GARR's Hulsey Yard. With the consolidation of lines in the late 20th century & the cities continuing growth, the line was downgraded, but was still in use by successor company CSX into the 2000s thanks to local customers. After finally being abandoned by CSX, most of the 5 mile line is now part of the bigger Atlanta BeltLine multi-use trail. Why this signal is still standing, let alone actually still online, is beyond me, but it definitely made a nice surprise & reminder of the cities past.
