The GP35 That Refused to Change
This Erie-Lackawanna GP35 was stripped of its EL identity by Conrail, but a reversal of fortune compelled the forces at the shop where it was being serviced to apply PC-style “EL” letters where the heralds had previously been. My guess is that any mechanical work needed was complete before the numbers could be changed, and this was the quickest way to get 2500 hp back to work for power-short Conrail.
