Remarks & Notes

Cruising south at Hanging Rocks. With the relatively humidity essentially at 100%, clouds are forming along the ridgelines as the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad's excursion train makes its way south toward its base of operations in Romney, WV, pictured here passing through Hanging Rocks, just about 2 miles to the north. Not being from the local area, I can only guess that this little hamlet is named for the rocky cliffs that overlook the South Branch of the Potomac River, just behind the train. Astute observers will note that on the other end of this consist sits another F-unit, facing north. With no convenient turning facilities on some of their excursions, these trains typically run with a cab unit on either end and simply reverse direction after reaching their destinations. It eliminates some switching operations and makes the turning process easier on the crews and passengers.
