The scene may be nondescript, but the track is the original South Carolina Canal and Railroad, one of the oldest segments of rail line in the United States. There were few customers left in the area by 1977, and the line, which opened in 1830, would be gone in a few years, replaced by condos and restaurants and touristy 'stuff'.
Photos taken in the Deep South--primarily Alabama and Georgia--from the 1970s to the early 2000s. Featured railroads include the ICG, the West Point Route, SCL, Southern, Frisco, and even KCS.
Selected photos of locomotives, passenger cars, and rolling stock in the Southern's livery as well as other assets once belonging to or used by the Southern.
