Remarks & Notes
BNSF train Z-AUGSBD7-18 (Priority UPS-LTL Intermodal, Austell GA to San Bernardino CA) traverses an S-curve as it utilizes the “natural crossover” that the Santa Fe built at Frost, a mile south of Victorville in the Mojave Desert. (This crossover allows trains to switch to the preferred tracks to cross Cajon Pass, as the original mainline has a steeper grade and is preferred for westbound – downhill – trains, but necessitates “left hand” running.) The Z-AUGSBD was combined with another most much of its journey, but the two were separated in Barstow. (It was a melancholy separation, as the two had gotten very close during their journey.) This now 38-car train is powered by BNSF Dash 9-44CW 4119, built in October 2002, and Norfolk Southern SD70ACe 1069, constructed in May 2012. NS 1069 is one of the twenty Heritage locomotives painted by the NS a decade earlier, with each wearing the markings of a predecessor railroad that made up today’s NS. This one, of course, honors the old Virginian Railway. Virginian’s scheme is a good fit for modern power! (Victorville, California - April 21, 2021)
