Mohawk Means Mountain. New New York Central 3001 (4-8-2, Alco, 1940) is the largest surviving steam engine of the NYC fleet. While on other railroads this wheel arrangement was referred to as “Mountain”, the name did not quite fit on the mostly flat Water Level Route, and the Central referred to these engines by the name of the river that paralleled much of its route across New York State. Presently residing at the National New York Central Museum in Elkhart, Indiana, it is 1 of 2 NYC Mohawks still in existence out of 600 produced, as seen after a light snow on the morning of Sunday, January 24, 2021.
