Winter on the Maine Coast. In a cold, wind-driven rain, so common in coastal New England winters, WW&F Locomotive #9 races southbound near Humanson Brook, toward the seaport town of Wiscasset, Maine with a freight extra. Dedicated freight trains were a bit unusual on the original WW&F, as the railway typically only ran a couple of trains a day, which were typically hauling a mix of freight and passenger equipment. Few historical photos depict trains running with a caboose, but such photos do exist. Caboose #320, which brings up the flags on this trip, is a replica of a caboose that the original railroad planned to build but never did. It was constructed in 1998 by the volunteers of present-day WW&F Railway Museum.
Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.
