A westbound BNSF coal load climbs the 2.2% grade out of Austin, Montana, on the the serpentine route over Mullan Pass on October 7, 2020. The head end is working toward the loop around Iron Ridge, while down below, one of four MRL SD70ACe locomotives in a manned helper set cut in mid-train, grinds away toward the west switch of Austin. Two more BNSF GEs are pushing on the rear as DPUs. Above the grove of yellow trees is Iron Ridge Cut, a portion of the west portal of bypassed Iron Ridge Tunnel, and a third level of track climbing toward Weed. The show up Mullan Pass is still a good one.
