Remarks & Notes
A portrait of the oldest locomotive of the Rhaetian Railway in regular service. The Ge 4/4 I, also called "BoBo-eins" (four axle locomotive, all axle driven, first series), # 602 "Bernina" was built by SLM, BBC and MFO and delivered on July 21, 1947. It was of course pine green, had 3 front windows and a door at the front, two sissors pantographs on the roof and the locomotive number 602, RhB and the name "Bernina" were written on the side wall with raised chrome letters. In the beginning, the locomotive was mainly used in express train service, but at the end of its career it is used now in subordinate services for freight traffic to supply the construction site for the Albula Tunnel II in Preda and Spinas, from Samedan. In the meantime, it has covered a mileage of well over 6 million kilometers. The hourly output is 1180 kW (1600 HP) and the maximum speed today is 80 km/h (first it was 75 km/h). At the beginning of the 1990s, the 10 locomotives of the series were rebuilt and got a modern and roomier cab, and their paint scheme got red instead of green, which changed their appearance quite a bit. The locomotive # 602 was given to the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne (VHS) on March 7, 2012 as a five-year loan, but was brought back to Landquart on November 16, 2015 due to demand and put back into service in July 2016. This locomotive is the only one of the 4 still operational Ge 4/4 I which still carries the faded sticker for Rhaetian Railway World Heritage from 2008.
