Hey, been a while since you visited! Connecticut DOT/CT Rail 6696 (New Haven RR heritage, GP40-2H) visits Springfield Union Station in Springfield, MA on the morning of Sunday, March 11, 2018 as part of “Amtrak Extra 6696/1703”. CT Rail and Herzog were familiarizing crews with the route between New Haven, CT and Springfield, MA for the upcoming introduction of more frequent commuter service. Union Station was historically used by a variety of railroads including the New York, New Haven, and Hartford (until its absorption by Penn Central in 1969), but was then only host to Amtrak trains. Unit 6696, normally used for Connecticut DOT Shore Line East, was one of 2 units remaining in this heritage paint scheme, as CT Rail has designed a new livery for this service.
