Winter Wonderland in the Tunnel District
In this frame I took some creative license and removed with the cloning tool the power line and wood pole that is adjacent to the track. The pole and power line doesn’t obscure the locomotive or the train however it is unsightly and unfortunate. I felt with the approval of the screener that you all would still enjoy seeing this rare opportunity to capture this extraordinary scene that only can be seen in the tunnel district of the Moffat sub. I don’t recommend going into this area without chains on your 4x4 in these conditions. It is also a private drive which I had permission to access. The snow is well over the hubs and the mud on the poorly maintained road is like grease under the snow. This pole I removed was added sometime after 2010 when the UP installed PTC. I thank my friend Mike Danneman for showing me this spot. It’s always going to be my absolute favorite on the Moffat Tunnel Subdivision.
In this frame Amtrak 5 is briskly moving along in the 2 feet of fresh snowfall through a very classic spot on the Moffat Road deep in the tunnel district. You can still work the angles here if you are careful and with the trees heavy in fresh snow or in this case close to 28” worth they tend to lean up a little opening the scene up even further. It’s an absolutely beautiful spot and one of the very best on the eastern slope and for me finally realizing a dream to get it this last Winter was a blessing. The morning sunrise is filtering in from the storm system that is moving out of the area adding to the beautiful drama that unfolded before me. By 2pm most of this flock was gone from the trees. |
