Not long ago, Not far away. This exhibit at the Museum of Jewish Heritage - A Living Memorial to the Holocaust in Manhattan, New York is part of an exhibition on Auschwitz. This car is one of 120,000 Model 2 freight wagons manufactured between 1910-1927 for the Deutsche Reichsban (German State Railway). It is part of a temporary exhibit on display until May 2, 2021.
"From the summer of 1940 to early 1945, people targeted by the Nazis—Jewish people, as well as European resisters to German rule, hostages, Soviet prisoners of war, Roma, and others—were packed into freight cars such as this and forcibly transported to destinations unknown to them. For many the destination was a place in German-annexed Poland: Auschwitz."
In the background, the 9/11 Tribute In Lights illuminate the scene on the night of Friday, September 11, 2020. 19 years ago this day on 9/11/2001, another tragedy occurred when the World Trade Center towers were destroyed in a terrorist attack less than a half mile from this location. The lights shine from sunset to sun up one day a year near the location of the WTC and the 9/11 Tribute Museum, an annual memorial of that horrific day. Not long ago, Not far away.
