The northbound and southbound Vermonter trains meet in Palmer, a few years before the the service was rerouted to the Connecticut River line, eliminating the Springfield-Palmer backup move.

The successor to the Montrealer, the Vermonter runs between St. Albans, Vt., and Washington, DC. Much of the northern part of the route runs along the Connecticut and White Rivers.
