Is it Dead forever? US Steel laid rails to Atlantic City Iron Mine in 1962. The railroad hauled ore out of the mine to a connection with the Union Pacific until 1983. The railroad crossed the historic South Pass then climbed a 2% grade to the 8000+ foot elevation of the Atlantic City Taconite Plant. When iron prices roared to record highs in 2012-2015 reopening the pit was discussed including relaying the rail from Rock Springs . It is estimated the Atlantic City pit and surrounding mine area holds 200 million tons of iron ore reserves. Who knows what the future holds, it would be a railfan dream to see trains climb this spectacular railroad again!
