BNSF 9045 slowly rolls across the large steel bridge that spans the North Platte River. The coal empty is leaving Guernsey, WY and heading for the Powder River coal fields. The lead track that drops left of the bridge across the river is all that is left of the Colorado & Wyoming railroad that served the massive iron ore mine at Sunrise, WY. A earlier alignment can also be seen passing under the bridge on the far side of the river. This earlier grade once crossed the river on its own bridge and then climbed a 2+% hill (mountain) to a connection with the C&S. After the CB&Q completed the Guernsey- Wendover connection in late 1915, the steep C&W line that challenged ore trains was abandoned.
