Remarks & Notes |
Here we see the California Zephyr rounding Big Ten Curve. Big Ten is a series of long curved sections of track ('Little Ten' is 90 degrees and the largest, 'Big Ten', is 270 degrees) with a track radius of 10 degrees.
The curves allow for a constant grade of 2% while climbing 350 vertical feet between Rocky and Coal Creek Canyon.
The trees you see along the upper edge are actually hiding 24 hoppers which have been loaded with rock and permanently placed there as a wind break. Winds in this area have been noted to reach over 100mph, with one gust in 1982 documented at 137 MPH. |
