Remarks & Notes
First generation turbo

A 2 years-old ETG turbotrain is ready for departure for Caen in Paris Saint Lazare station. It is surrounded by old passenger cars: ex-ETAT on the left and “Saucisson” (sausage) cars on track 20. The ANF cars for domestic services (USI) on the far right were more recent (built 1960-71).

ETG stands for Element ŕ Turbine ŕ Gaz : Gas Turbine Element. The word element was then very fashionable in technocratic parlance, as it belonged to the new mathematics approach called set theory. The ETG train sets were composed of 4 carbodies: a passenger-power car with a 857 Kw gas turbine, 2 passenger cars, and a passenger-power car with a 336 Kw diesel that was used only to start the train until about 40 kph. The max commercial speed was 160 kph (99 mph). The power-to-weight ratio was high as the ETG were light, thus allowing higher speed in curves without damaging the tracks.

The ETG were built between August 1970 and July 1972. Their first assignment was the Paris-Caen-Cherbourg line and its Lisieux-Deauville branch. This was a sharp modernization with a much-accelerated timetable (travel times were reduced by about 20%). the growth in ridership was such a success that new turbotrains with more capacity and more power were ordered to replace them: they were the famous RTG that were later exported to the USA.
